Langeder, Helmut

Artist painter

Unlike some artists who express themselves in a poetic, mystical or abstract way, my paintings are based entirely on realism with a "specific sense of place"

Born in Steyr, Austria in1943. I came to Canada with my family in 1954 at the age of thirteen. I started painting in oils at the age of fourteen. I studied at Thomas Darcy McGee High School and then went to McGill University in the field of Architecture. I abandoned university after one year and took a course at Studio 5316 in Commercial Art. My first job was with Penthouse Studio, then Criterion Art. I worked as a designer and illustrator reaching the top in my field. This is where I really perfected my skills of drawing and the use of new mediums such as acrylic. For the last twenty seven years of my career as a commercial artist I was co-owner, illustrator and creative director of Catalpa Design Inc..

During all this time I never stopped painting, mostly landscapes or quaint villages and city scenes. When time and conditions allow, I sketch or paint on location to capture the mood and give my interpretation of the scene.

I had started to have many art admirers and began exhibiting my paintings in the 80s at the 9th floor Eatons Art Gallery in Montreal. My work was selling well and started to find its way across Canada.

Since my retirement in 2004, I am enjoying my freedom to paint full time. I have become very active in the art community. I am a member of the Society of Canadian Artists, the Lakeshore Artists Assn. and the Beaconsfield Artists Assn.. After several plein-air trips to Charlevoix, I have had the opportunity to meet and become friends with many artists of the region. I have also been an invited guest artist for the past four years to the Festival Rêves d'Automne in Baie-Saint-Paul. I have also participated in many group exhibitions as well as a few solo exhibitions and symposiums. Although I am a self-tought artist, I have taken a few workshops with artist like Chui Wang and Juan Christobal for oil and Jacques Hébert for watercolor. There is always room to improve and try something new.

My work is presently represented by: Galerie Guylaine Fournier in Baie-Saint-Paul, Que., Gemst Gallery in Montreal, Que., as well as Galerie Jackson in Saint-Ours, Que.

Artist's Statement
Unlike some artists who express themselves in a poetic, mystical or abstract way, my paintings are based entirely on realism with a "specific sense of place". My preference has always been to paint peaceful landscapes, often broken up by some architectural element such as houses, barns or villages. Occasionally I'll switch pace and endulge in painting more vibrant city scenes. Always keeping in mind the elements of good composition such as structure, tone, color, focal point and texture, I try to bring out the best in nature. My influences on art have been the Impressionists, Some of the Group of Seven, Sargent, Clarence Gagnon and Bruno Côté. Executed on canvas or paper, each brushstroke or splash of color becomes part of a complete image that will last forever, hopefully reflecting my enthusiasm and love for art.
